With the introduction of emoticons into our vocabulary, are we moving beyond the controlled, simplified and limiting language of Orwell’s Newspeak?
Are we returning to proto-literate forms of visual communication where pictograms replace words? Is this system designed to confuse and dumb-down language to such an extent that we are unable to communicate nuanced or complex thoughts with each other?
