Homestead High School’s Students Against Fracking the Environment (SAFE) is a student-led anti-fracking organization that aims to increase awareness about hydraulic fracturing in hopes of encouraging the passing of anti-fracking legislation. Fracking further depletes our water supply by chemically treating water for use in the fracking process to the point where reusing the water is impossible. This water is then injected deep into the earth to fracture hard rock, which releases natural gas and prompts local seismic activity. During this historic drought, California can not afford the wasted water.

SAFE hopes to inform the community of the dangers of fracking. This includes the increased probability of earthquakes and the additional wasted water. These effects are detrimental to California because a large earthquake is already expected at any time as well as the current drought situation.

SAFE’s movement is to encourage the greater public to make well-informed decisions concerning the environmental and economical outcomes of the current debate over fracking
