The Rosenbergs — Grey Day

The Rosenbergs — Grey Day

Ralph Fasanella

In the first of series of Rosenberg paintings, “The Rosenbergs — Grey Day,” 1963, the doomed couple sit together within an enormous “A” for “Atom,” the destructive power of which is captured by the menacing masklike image at the apex of the “A.” The three levels within the “A” carry the artist’s messages: the top level shows prosecutors, military brass and business types mingling easily; the middle level depicts the Rosenbergs at home, holding hands and seated on what looks eerily like an electric chair ornamented with a menorah, and the lower level shows the doomed couple seated on electric chairs on either side of a row of cells containing, presumably, convicted “Reds.” Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York, and the estate of Ralph Fasanella. ©Estate of Ralph Fasanella
