Wangari Maathai Planting Trees in Kenya

Wangari Maathai Planting Trees in Kenya

Fiber arts and mixed media sculpture with needle felted Wangari Maathai

Submitted by RAFTT (Radical Art For These Times)

This scene depicts Wangari Maathai (1940-2011), a Kenyan environmentalist who made it her mission to teach her countrywomen to plant trees to end the desertification of the land. Her Green Belt Movement has planted more than 30 million trees in Africa and has helped nearly 900,000 women, according to the UN, while inspiring similar efforts in other African countries.

This is one piece in a series that makes up a fiber-arts installation illustrating true stories of brave nonviolent direct actions in defense of planet Earth. People who take a stand against the destruction of the environment by puting their bodies in the way of corporate-government greed and corruption are the true heros of our time.
